Purpose of the Investigation
A Technical Investigation is a targeted independent examination of a specific technical defect, failure, abnormal condition or recurring malfunction affecting the yacht, its machinery, systems or equipment.
Its purpose is to document the observed condition, review the available technical information, assess the probable cause or causes and identify any further investigation or remedial action considered appropriate.
Scope of Investigation
The scope is defined specifically for each assignment and may include, as applicable:
- propulsion machinery and transmissions;
- generators and auxiliary machinery;
- electrical and electronic systems;
- steering and control systems;
- hydraulic systems;
- fuel, cooling, lubrication and exhaust systems;
- navigation and communication equipment;
- domestic and auxiliary installations;
- structural or installation-related defects;
- previous repairs, refit work or technical modifications;
- documentation, maintenance records and repair history made available for review.
Investigation Methodology
The investigation may include visual inspection, functional testing, review of available documentation, operating data and alarm history, comparison with manufacturer information and technical specifications, and discussion with relevant operators, technicians or service providers.
Where appropriate and expressly agreed, specialist measurements, diagnostic testing, fluid analysis or other additional investigations may be recommended or commissioned.
Limitations
Unless expressly included in the agreed scope, the investigation is non-destructive and limited to visible and reasonably accessible areas.
Internal dismantling of machinery or equipment, destructive testing, laboratory analysis, manufacturer-level electronic diagnostics and specialist examinations are excluded unless specifically agreed.
The investigation is limited to the technical matter identified in the assignment and does not constitute a full Pre-Purchase Survey, condition survey or statutory inspection of the yacht.
Technical Report
A written report is issued setting out the information reviewed, inspections and tests performed, observed findings, relevant limitations, the surveyor’s technical opinion regarding the probable cause where reasonably determinable, and any recommendations for further investigation or remedial action.
